It is a fact that nowadays numerous adults have their first children in their thirties or even forties which is somewhat later than previous generations. This trend, which is caused by several reasons, certainly introduces both pros and cons, but it seems to me that the advantages do outweigh the disadvantages.

There are two main factors which make people delay to have babies regarding career orientation and costly expenses. In terms of the former, in the past, females stayed at home and took care of house chores and children while their husbands were the breadwinner. However, this is not the case at the present time since the modern world with economic development has promoted the participation in labour forces of citizens, especially women, thereby making people pay more attention to develop their own career and earn more money. Having babies would slow down or deter this progress so modern people who have career-oriented thinking would refuse to do so until they acquire fulfilment in their work. Turning to the other reason relating to money, bearing and nurturing a child would definitely bring about heavy financial burdens for families. Healthcare, food and education are the three primary aspects of bringing up children. Therefore, couples of husband and wife usually postpone in reproduction until they have abundant household incomes.

While the decision of having children in later ages would certainly pose some drawbacks, I believe that the benefits are worthwhile to do so. It is clear that if females get pregnant after 35 years old, there will be more risks for serious health problems and danger to the babies. Also, the more parents are ageing, the more their health gets weaker so they may not be healthy enough to take care of their children. Nevertheless, having babies late means that the couples have thought through about their responsibilities for the children so that they will be ready for the long and challenging process of nurturing a child, unlike many reckless young parents who are irresponsible for their children. Children who have older parents may receive a better education and financial support and so they will become good and well-educated citizens. Therefore, having children later in life seems to be a good trend for societies.      

In conclusion, many couples of husband and wife determine to delay having babies and there are reasons for that relating to career and finance. Despite some evident negative points of this trend, I believe the positive aspects regarding being ready in financial support and parents’ level of education are worthwhile.
