Nature or Nurture

(Reading time: 1 - 2 minutes)

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Opinions differ on whether or not human's talents are determined mostly by genetics. Personally, even though children might inherit abilities from their parents, I believe that human's personalities and achievements depend more on nurture than nature.

On the one hand, many people argue that human's abilities rely mainly on inheritance and genetics. They believe that parents would be a primary factor deciding what their children will be good at. For example, if there is a child whose father is a composer and mother is a singer, he or she will be more likely to have inborn talents in music. Talents are more of inheritance rather than learning is what supporters of this idea normally tell when it comes to explaining why some people are better or learn something faster than others.

On the other hand, I am in agreement with those who think that education and upbringing are more important. Humans develop according to the influence around them and are not limited by genetic characteristics. Therefore, achievements to any goal can be possible if people work hard, stay focus and maintain self-motivation. There are many inspiring people in the world who have overcome their disadvantaged background and become successful. Talents and success are 'self-made' and this has been stated by Thomas Edison in his famous quote: "The origin of genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration".

In conclusion, while there are people who believe that the talents of one person depend primarily on being inherited from parents, it seems to me that efforts and practices outweigh inheritance regarding people's characteristics and capabilities.
