- Thân bài - đoạn 2: Viết về providing taller buildings. Trước hết nói về bất lợi mà không thể tránh khỏi, nhưng sau đó viết về lợi thế để nhìn chung là khen phương án này;
- Kết bài: Khẳng định là building on wider areas does more harm than good, vì vậy providing taller buildings is better
It is a fact that authorities of densely-populated urban areas come up with two major solutions to the problem of lacking housing space including a provision of accommodations in high-rise constructions and an expansion of residential areas on wider land areas. The two measures are obviously advantageous and disadvantageous at the same time, but I hold the view that urban upward expansion is much more beneficial compared with outward expansion.
On the one hand, nobody can deny the certain advantages of developing cities horizontally with suburban sprawl. As urban areas get wider, there will be more open space available, making it totally possible for an increase in the number and the size of accommodations built. However, this approach is unsustainable due to a great number of threats it will pose to the human life. Cities sprawling to the surrounding countryside means that large amounts of farmland, undeveloped land or forests will be soon cleared to make way for concrete buildings, asphalt roads, and motor vehicles. As a result, a reduction in farmland will threaten global food supplies while the disappearance of undeveloped land and forests means that more trees will be chopped down and more animals will lose their habitat.
On the other hand, although developing cities vertically will present challenges for human life, people will benefit more from this measure. It is undeniable that dwellers living in urban areas with numerous tall apartments blocks are more likely to suffer from overcrowding-related problems such as traffic congestion caused by high traffic density and different kinds of pollutions resulted from too many human activities. However, this approach is actually the most feasible and economical way to save space and accommodate more occupants, as buying a smaller plot of land and constructing a tall building is more affordable than purchasing a widespread of terrain. In addition, developing cities upwards will help to slow down the pace of urbanisation, leaving the available land for cultivating and the natural world. Consequently, in the long term, this will help to maintain the global food supply and protect the natural environment.
In conclusion, based on the upside and downside mentioned above, horizontal urban development does more harm than good, and therefore it is much better to expand cities upwards by building more high-rise buildings for increasingly high urban population.
