Some people think that newly built houses should follow the style of the old houses in the local areas, while others think that people should have freedom to build houses of their own styles.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Opinions are divided on whether or not people should be given the freedom in choosing their own housing styles. Personally, I believe that both decisions come with their own merits and the regulations of housing construction should depend on the character of a local area.

On the one hand, it is clear that the idea of newly-built houses following the same style of the existing residential environment is reasonable to some extent. This is mainly to serve the purpose of maintaining traditional architectural values in a particular area. Traditional houses and other structures possess distinct character and give a strong sense of identity to the locality. Therefore, if modern buildings were constructed in that area, it would definitely be incompatible with the prevailing character and appearance of the neighbourhood. Consequently, this would degrade the traditional beauty and aesthetic value of the area. This idea will best suit the local areas with existing distinct architectural character.

On the other hand, having freedom to customise the house design shows some certain strengths, particularly in recently-established residential areas or areas with vague local character. Tailored houses would allow creativity and show up the distinct personal style in housing design. However, housing development within established residential areas must appreciate the characteristics of the existing residential environment, rather than spoiling the architectural character of the whole area. Therefore, the local area planning department should have their control by considering and having approval on house design proposals before allowing real estate owners to start the construction.

In conclusion, it seems to me that the control over housing design depends on the types of that area, but the common theme is that the new housing must be in harmony with the existing characters of an area.
