It comes as no surprise that e-books have gained enormous popularity recently. While digital reading materials introduce certain benefits, several drawbacks may also arise as a consequence.

On the one hand, reasons why readers prefer e-books can be attributed to the convenience in storage, portability and affordable prices. First, keeping a large book collection definitely takes up a lot of space and requires regular maintenance to keep books in good conditions, as opposed to non-space consumption characteristic of electronic reading materials. Second, e-readers are able to carry a portable library in small and light technological devices, such as smartphones, laptops or tablets, thanks to e-books. Last but not least, many digital books are often sold at lower prices than paper books because of the zero cost for printing, making book covers or delivery.

On the other hand, e-books also bring about some particular disadvantageous aspects. Being able to access electronic reading materials means readers must know how to utilise technological devices, computer software or mobile applications. This will be a challenge for senior people who usually struggle with modern technologies. In addition, e-books can hardly inspire people to read more due to a lack of physical connections, namely the feeling of touching paper, or the smell of books. Furthermore, digital reading materials are read on screens of computers or mobile devices which have a different type of resolution from paper printing. So, reading e-books may result in eyestrain and discomfort.

In conclusion, it is the fact that more and more people prefer digital books over printed ones. This success is understandable because of practical positives. However, this new fashion of reading also shows its downside, which handicaps conservative readers and the elderly.
