It is a fact that there are more foreigners paying visits to museums and other historical spots than local dwellers. This trend happens because of several reasons but this situation can be changed by multiple actions of state tourism planners to attract the local.

There are two main reasons regarding the current interests of the public and unattractive display of the museums themselves which explain why the locals are not keen on visiting such places. First, local young people nowadays have an inclination towards science, mathematics or English rather than history or local culture. This will consequently cause people to have no intention in visiting museums or historical sites. Second, some museums have failed to capture people’s attention. Particularly, most of the objects are kept out of sight with barriers around for protection. This passive and one-way exhibit would reduce the interaction between visitors and artworks, thereby not inspiring them to visit those places again, especially local citizens, since they have little motivation to visit museums.

The most effective way to increase the attendance at museums of the local inhabitants is to have a mixed media approach that allows different people to engage at various levels. More precisely, the museum management board could blend technology, culture and history in activities for guests to bring interactive experiences. For example, visitors will receive a high-tech pen that they can use on tabletop screens arranged around the museum. Then, if they draw a straight line with the pen, and a piece of artwork from the collection – in that shape – pops up on the screen. Same things happen with other lines. Some monuments or historical sites should include watching videos, playing small games related to informative contents showed in the museums to encourage visitors’ attention.

In conclusion, local people rarely visit museums and historical places because they are interested in other spheres rather than history or culture, and some museums arrange their collections in a dull way. Nevertheless, this situation can be improved by designing more interactive activities for guests during their visit at those sites.
