Regarding starting/ commencing a new life in a new country, many people think that it is necessary to follow the host country’s traditions and customs. From my perspective, I am completely in agreement with this view because of several reasons.
As a matter of fact, if newcomers avoided to adjust themselves into the new culture, their lives in the host country would inevitably encounter greater challenges. To specify, the rejection of the new culture would lead to more serious culture shock, which is a normal issue of newcomers. The more people persist with the way they were accustomed to living and reject the new customs and traditions, the more they notice only the things that cause them trouble and suffer from negative feelings, including irritation, frustration, anger and depression. This would make them disconnected to other people and their surroundings.
There is an English proverb stating: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, and clearly the message of the saying still has its merit at the present time. The most effective way to adapt into the new life is observing and following the traditions and customs of the new culture. By doing so, newcomers begin to understand more of the host country’s traditional practices and are able to interpret some of the subtle clues which passed by unnoticed earlier. As a result, things would make more sense and the culture seems more familiar, and new arrivals may even find themselves enjoying some of the very customs that bothered them so much previously. This would make their process of adjustment and adaptation occur to a new optimistic attitude.
In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I totally agree with the idea that when one person is visiting or moving to a new country, he or she should follow the traditions and customs of that place.
