Lesson 7: Cách nhận xét Double Map
Có 2 loại bài tập nhận xét bản đồ. Loại phổ biến nhất mà các bạn nên tập trung nhiều hơn là bản đồ kép, tức là đề cho 2 bản đồ của cùng một khu vực với những sự thay đổi. Có thể cả 2 bản đồ đó đều của các mốc thời gian trong quá khứ, hoặc là 1 bản đồ hiện tại và 1 bản đồ tương lai (được lên kế hoạch).

Khi làm bài dạng bản đồ kép, tự đặt các câu hỏi như sau:
- Xu hướng phát triển / thay đổi của khu vực này là gì?
- Nếu có thêm nhiều housing, flat/ apartment: housing/ residential development
- Nếu có thêm nhiều tiện ích hiện đại: hotel, car park, golf course, restaurant, airport, mall, etc: commercial development
- Nếu có thêm nhiều factory, warehouses: industrial development
- Có bị đô thị hoá hay không? Nếu có, “became more urbanized”
- Các không gian trống có giảm đi không? Nếu có, “less open space”
- Có thể chia bản đồ thành hai khu vực dựa vào cột mốc nào?
- Những sự thay đổi về cơ sở hạ tầng ở 2 khu vực đó là gì?

Bước 1: Quan sát & chọn key features
Ta thấy có 1 dòng sông cắt ngang bản đồ này, vậy ta sẽ nhận xét 2 khu vực: 1) north of the river, 2) south of the river.
Ở bài bản đồ, đơn giản nhất là có những sự khác biệt nào thì bạn cứ đề cập hết.
Nhìn tổng quan, ta thấy thay đổi chủ yếu là có thêm:
- houses & apartment blocks --> residential development;
- shops/ shopping complex, hotel with golf course --> commercial development;
- factories & warehouses --> industrial development
Bước 2: Lên bố cục bài viết & sắp xếp các key feature.

The maps illustrate the urbanization that took place in the in the town called Eastminster between the years 1999 and 2009.
It is clear that this town experienced a significant transformation regarding residential, commercial and industrial developments throughout the period given.
North of the river, which divides the town, the woodland in the northwest was turned into an adventure park. Moreover, by 2009 the large house with gardens had been replaced with a hotel and a golf course. More houses were also built encroaching on the park in the northeast. The other main development north of the river was the relocation of the school from the south bank of the river.
The area south of the river experienced greater changes. To the east, the streets of houses were demolished to make way for blocks of flats. By 2009, where a public garden stood south of the old streets of houses, there were more houses. Further developments that occurred were the construction of factories and warehouses along the railway line together with the conversion of the school on the river into a new shopping complex. The final transformation was the expansion of the hospital west of the old-school situated on the river.

The maps below show the centre of a small town called Islip as it is now, and plans for its development.

Đối với dạng bản đồ này, bạn sẽ thấy không có con sông hay cái gì cắt ngang để làm cột mốc khi nó ra cả. Vậy thì phải làm saoooo??!
Rất đơn giản, mình cứ gom những cái gì nổi nhất ra nói trước, những cái nhỏ nhỏ còn lại thì gom lại nói sau. Vẫn là quy tắc 'hội nhà giàu' và 'hội nhà nghèo' ấy.
Ở đây, theo thầy Simon hướng dẫn, hội nổi bật có ứng viên sáng giá nhất là 'dual carriageway' hoặc là cái ring road around the centre. Hội còn lại là xây thêm housing và shops.
Nhớ là đừng nhận xét riêng từng bản đồ, mà bạn lấy 1 đối tượng ra rồi xét đối tượng đó ở bản đồ present thì thế nào, bản đồ future thì thế nào; cứ thể tiếp tục qua các đối tượng khác.
Sử dụng thì hiện tại + tương lai + thể bị động.
Từ vựng: planned developments = possible/ potential/ proposed changes = how it looks in the future

The diagrams illustrate some proposed changes to the central area of the town of Islip. It is clear that the principal change to the town will be the construction of a ring road around the centre. Various other developments with regard to shops and housing will accompany the building of this road. Looking at the map of Islip as it is now, we can see that the main road runs through its centre from east to west. The second map shows the planned pedestrianisation of this road. Traffic will be diverted on to a dual carriageway that will form a ring around the town centre. Currently, there is a row of shops along either side of the main road. However, it appears that the shops along the north side of the new pedestrian street will be demolished to make way for a bus station, shopping centre, car park and new housing area. The shops along the south side of the street will remain, but it seems that the town’s park will be reduced in size so that more new houses can be built within the ring road.
