Sample answer
The maps illustrate how the town called Lakeside urbanised during nine years in the early 21st century. Overall, as the town developed, woodland and residential areas gave way to industrial and commercial developments.
Looking first at the area south of the river, what was originally a small industrial area expanded into a substantial industrial complex that occupied a much larger area in the south-east and replaced both housing and some woodland in 2009.
Turning to the north of the river, another area of housing turned into a shopping centre, north of which a multi-screen cinema has now replaced the old arts centre. The residential housing remained unchanged, but east of it a car park and offices were built on the site of the disused warehouses and the old town. In addition, a new university in more schools replaced some woodland in parts of the lake. Finally, what was once a large Lake turned into a much smaller pond in 2009.
